Federal Grant Assistance

NRPC assists our communities navigating the federal transportation grant application process.

Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality

The Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) program provides federal funds to support the implementation of projects that reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality in areas not meeting federally mandated air quality standards. Projects require a non-federal match of 20%. Types of projects eligible for funding under the CMAQ program category include: transit projects; transportation demand management (TDM) programs; intersection and signal improvements projects that reduce traffic delays; alternative fuel projects, bike and pedestrian facilities and other initiatives that reduce emissions of air pollutants. NHDOT provides a full list of eligible projects.

Transportation Alternatives

The Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) provides funding for programs and projects defined as transportation alternatives, including on- and off-road pedestrian and bicycle facilities, infrastructure projects for improving non-driver access to public transportation and enhanced mobility, community improvement activities, and environmental mitigation; recreational trail program projects; safe routes to school projects; and projects for planning, designing, or constructing boulevards and other roadways largely in the right-of-way of former Interstate System routes or other divided highways.
