We often think of trails as providing wonderful locations to hike, bike ride, view wildlife, and simply enjoy nature.  But trails can also connect people and places, provide an alternative to vehicular travel, and even promote economic development. Communities and non-profits throughout the Nashua Region have developed extensive trail networks that provide abundant recreation opportunities and enhance the quality of life for those living in the area.

NRPC is helping to build this valuable resource through its work on the Lower Merrimack River Recreational Trails project, which will gather detailed information on existing trails and access points to the Lower Merrimack River.

This project is being funded by a grant from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services and will help in the implementation of the Lower Merrimack River Corridor Management Plan.

The project will begin by mapping existing trails within the Lower Merrimack River corridor using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. NRPC will also verify the ownership of properties that the trails traverse, determine the types of use and activity seen on the trails, identify areas where trails are in need of repair or are causing excessive environmental damage, and recommend opportunities for improvement and/or increased connectivity.  This initial inventory is the first step in developing a continuous trail system and fulfills a number of the Lower Merrimack River Corridor Management Plan’s goal and objectives.

The goal of this project is to increase public awareness of access and recreational activities in the Lower Merrimack River corridor. The information gained will set the stage for future improvements to the recreational resources along the Merrimack River, including greater trail connectivity, expanded support facilities, and better access opportunities.

The first project deliverable will be a corridor map showing the existing trail network along with an informational brochure describing key points of interest.  This literature will be distributed to local recreation-oriented businesses, user groups, and municipal offices and will be available to the general public from our website.
